WoW Forever cooking XP food: simple meals for your leveling route

Which WoW Forever foods give bonus XP? Compare three early recipes, learn how the 5% kill XP buff works and fit cooking into your leveling route.

How does the Cooking XP buff work?

Several cooked foods in the WoW Forever beta give a small stat bonus alongside 5% extra experience from kills. For Brilliant Smallfish, Herb Baked Egg and Spiced Wolf Meat, the current tooltips say to eat for at least 10 seconds to become well fed. The listed buff lasts 15 minutes.

That makes a meal a useful part of a break before heading back to nearby enemies. Put food somewhere easy to find on your action bar and check that the buff has appeared before moving on. Stopping after a quick bite can miss the ten-second requirement.

Three early foods to look for

Wowhead’s September 26 list includes these low-skill recipes. The skill column is the Cooking requirement reported there, not your character level. The stat bonuses come from the individual Forever item tooltips.

Brilliant Smallfish1+2 Attack Power5% from kills
Herb Baked Egg1+1 Stamina5% from kills
Spiced Wolf Meat25+1 Agility5% from kills

Start with a recipe you can actually make

Choose a meal around the recipe you know and ingredients you already collect. Check your Cooking window before shopping. Having the skill shown in a list does not establish that you have learned the recipe or that a nearby vendor sells it.

If two meals are equally convenient, compare the stat bonus with what your character uses. Otherwise, a modest meal you can regularly make is a better starting point than an expensive shopping trip for a tiny upgrade.

Use the finished food’s tooltip when checking the XP benefit. The ingredients and the cooked meal are different items. Keep enough ordinary food and drink for recovery as well, rather than treating the XP buff as your whole supply plan.

Does food increase quest XP?

The three tooltips above specify experience from kills. They do not describe a bonus to quest hand-ins. Plan around the wording on the food you are using.

It also does not mean your entire leveling session becomes 5% shorter. Travel, conversations, professions and other activities are part of that session. Keep useful food with you, but there is little reason to abandon a good quest loop just to refresh it.

Fit meals around the journey you are already making

Our approach is to cook during a planned stop, eat before a stretch of fighting and let the route carry on. A return to town is a good moment to check recipes and supplies. A quiet recovery break is a natural time to refresh an expired buff.

Save ingredients for a recipe you intend to use. If your bags are filling with materials for recipes you cannot make yet, decide what to keep before leaving town. Do not turn a short questing session into a hunt for every possible meal.

Following a written leveling guide or using Wisp in game can keep the next destination clear while you make those choices. Cooking is another part of the adventure, so leave yourself room to stop when you find something interesting.

Food buffs and Camping are separate

Blizzard describes campsites as places to rest, gain benefits from crafted objects and refresh food buffs. That does not make every camp benefit part of the meal. Check the food buff and any campsite effects separately.

The beta food list also notes that some foods do not yet show an XP bonus. Read the current item tooltip rather than assuming every cooked dish has one. We have not tested how this bonus combines with rested experience or other XP effects, so this guide does not promise a combined percentage.
