WoW Forever sharding: why do players disappear at zone borders?
Players are reporting disappearing groups at WoW Forever zone borders. Separate sharding complaints from quest phasing and check what to do before restarting your route.
Is this sharding, layering or a quest problem?
If other players disappear as you cross a zone border in the WoW Forever beta, you are not the only person reporting it. An October 14 r/classicwow discussion about seamless continents was among the community’s top posts when we checked on October 15.
Players in that discussion describe other players and nearby creatures changing or disappearing at boundaries. Replies distinguish this from a loading screen between zones. Those reports identify a frustrating symptom. They do not prove that every case has the same cause, or that your quest guide has sent you to the wrong place.

Realmless does not mean everyone shares one visible world
Blizzard says Forever groups players by ruleset rather than asking them to choose a traditional named realm. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, and Alliance and Horde remain separate. The intention is to make it easier to play together while still encountering familiar people.
That explains the basic grouping rules. It does not establish how many copies of a particular zone exist, how players are assigned to them, or why a particular party disappeared. Treat confident claims about those hidden details with care.
Start with what actually disappeared
The word “sharding” is being used broadly in the discussion. For troubleshooting, the useful distinction is what changed on your screen. Make a quick note before leaving the area or abandoning a quest.
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| A friend is missing but their party frame remains | Confirm your region, ruleset, location and quest stage together. |
| Many players or creatures change at a zone border | Record the boundary, direction of travel and time. This resembles the community reports, but is not a diagnosis. |
| An escort NPC disappears | Check the quest’s current state before abandoning it. Our escort guide covers this narrower problem. |
| The quest log changes but an addon still shows an old step | Compare the native quest log with the displayed guide step. A stale step and a missing player are different symptoms. |
Before you restart your leveling route
Stop somewhere safe and compare the native quest log with your party. Check whether the objective is still active, already completed, failed or ready to turn in. Avoid abandoning a long chain just because the people around you changed.
If the problem happens repeatedly, make the report reproducible. Include the client build, zone, coordinates or nearby landmark, quest name, party status and what happened immediately before the disappearance. A short recording of the boundary is more useful than a general report that the world feels empty.
These are checks we recommend, not a guaranteed workaround. We have not verified a command, addon or repeated relogging trick that fixes the reported zone-border behavior.
- Keep the same quest selected while comparing what each party member sees.
- Record whether crossing the boundary again changes the result.
- Do not repeatedly reset completed guide progress while investigating a visibility problem.
Can a leveling addon fix disappearing players?
Wisp provides supported quest steps and navigation. It cannot make the server put your party into the same visible world or restore a missing NPC. Its useful role here is keeping the next objective clear while you check the game’s quest state.
If you are choosing a route with friends, agree on your ruleset and starting point first. Then use the written route or in-game guide as a shared plan. Keep visibility bugs separate from route corrections when sending feedback.
