WoW Forever shared tagging: quest credit and playing with friends
Blizzard is keeping traditional mob tagging in WoW Forever. Here is what the latest statement means for crowded quests, grouping and quest-helper addons.

Is shared tagging coming to Forever?
Blizzard currently has no plans to replace Forever’s traditional tagging with retail-style shared tagging. Wowhead’s September 20 report covers Josh Greenfield’s explanation that some competition for enemies is part of the game’s social design.
The screenshot circulating on Reddit also leaves room for other ways to ease frustration. It does not announce a particular spawn-rate adjustment or a date for a fix. For now, plan crowded quests around the current rules rather than waiting for shared tagging to arrive.
Finding the right enemy and getting credit are different jobs
Shared tagging would let otherwise separate players receive credit from the same enemy under broader rules. Without that system, do not assume that hitting an enemy another player is fighting will advance your quest. Check the counter in your quest log after the kill.
Also read what the quest actually asks for. A kill objective and an item you must loot are different tasks. Completing one kill together does not establish that every member has collected every required item. Keep the group together until everyone has checked their progress.
Make the wait into a short group session
Our suggestion is to ask nearby players whether they need the same objective before the enemy appears. Agree on the quest, form the party and check that you can see each other before starting the fight. A quick invitation is more useful before a contested pull than halfway through it.
If the area is packed and nobody wants to group, consider another available quest nearby. Keep the unfinished objective on your list and return later. Avoid abandoning a chain simply because its next enemy is busy, especially if you have already completed prerequisites.
- Confirm everyone has the quest and the same objective.
- Finish any pending phase change before the pull.
- Check each player’s kill counter or quest items afterwards.
- Agree where to go next before leaving the group.
If your friend disappears, check phasing separately
A missing party member and missing quest credit can look like the same problem during a crowded fight. Start by checking whether you can actually see each other in the world. Then compare the quest objectives. Changing a guide step cannot fix a world-phase mismatch.
If the five-minute world refresh notice appears, move somewhere safe and let the group know. Our separate explanation covers the notice and its buttons. We have not verified that every party member receives the same timer.
What a quest-helper addon can help with
Quest helpers can help you recognise an enemy or find a destination. Wisp’s beta screenshot above shows target icons for that purpose. Its supported guides also provide a next step and navigation, with optional party progress sharing.
Those features do not change Blizzard’s tagging rules, award quest credit or put friends on the same phase. Use the quest log to confirm completion and the guide to keep track of where you are going next.
