WoW Forever Mage Comprehension: scrolls and skill requirements
Found a strange Mage scroll in Forever? Check Comprehension requirements, what beta players report about deciphering, and why older SoD instructions can mislead.

What is Comprehension?
Comprehension is the Mage skill named on Forever’s undeciphered scroll tooltips. Current records list a Mage restriction and a minimum Comprehension value. A scroll in your bag can therefore be something to save for later, even when your character can already explore the area where you found it.
Beta players describe learning a deciphering ability from a Mage trainer, using it on scrolls and developing the skill through reading. A September 20 Mage discussion also singles out scroll deciphering as an enjoyable part of the class. These are player experiences, not our own tested training route.
Check the skill requirement before buying scrolls
These are selected current Forever database records. The number in the right column is a Comprehension requirement. It is not the character level needed to use the item. Higher entries also do not establish what is obtainable during the opening beta phase.

What to check when a scroll will not work
Start with the item tooltip and your current skill. If the requirement is higher, keep the scroll while you investigate lower-requirement options. If you cannot find the deciphering ability, check your spellbook and ask your Mage trainer about available training before buying more items.
When testing a scroll, note its full name before deciphering and the item or effect afterwards. Similar-looking scroll names are easy to confuse. Keeping that pair makes it easier to recognise something useful the next time it drops.
- Confirm that the item belongs to the Forever version you are playing.
- Compare the required Comprehension with your current skill.
- Check whether you have learned the relevant ability.
- Read the resulting item before using or selling it.
Be careful with Season of Discovery scroll guides
A familiar scroll name is not enough to establish identical rules across game versions. Some older guides describe rune unlocks and Comprehension Charms. The current Forever records cited here explicitly name a Comprehension skill requirement.
Use the tooltip in your client to decide what you need. We have not verified a complete list of deciphered rewards, consumable requirements or trainer locations, so this article does not import a Season of Discovery shopping list into Forever.
Make scroll research part of your next town visit
Our suggestion is to keep a few promising scrolls and check them when you already return for training or supplies. That gives the system room in your adventure without turning every drop into a separate trip.
If you are choosing Mage for the first time, read the class’s three talent trees alongside this system. Scroll utility and talent choices answer different questions. A fun scroll effect does not by itself establish the best levelling build.
