WoW Forever spell ranks: why a new rank does not replace the one on your action bar
Bought a new spell rank in WoW Forever and nothing changed? Wowhead reports that ranks for mana-using abilities do not auto-update on action bars. How to find and drag the new rank.

Your action bar keeps the old rank
Wowhead reported on 22 September that, in the Forever beta, learning a new rank of a mana-using ability does not always replace the rank already on your action bar. The report says this affects casters and the melee classes that use mana, while Rogue and Warrior abilities update automatically.
The result is easy to miss: you pay the trainer, the spellbook shows the new rank, and the button you press still casts the old one. In Classic, casting a lower rank is a legitimate mana-saving technique, but only when you chose it.
How to find and drag the new rank
Wowhead describes a small down arrow on the spellbook entry as the way to reveal every rank you know. We have not checked whether the arrow looks different in an Edit Mode layout.

Why it matters while levelling
A lower rank costs less mana and does less damage or healing. For a Mage or Priest, a forgotten upgrade can leave you casting a rank several levels behind, which lengthens fights and makes the class feel weaker than it is. That is worth ruling out before drawing conclusions about tuning or spell power.
Paladins and Shamans are affected too, because their strikes and shocks use mana. According to the report, Warriors and Rogues can skip this check.
Is this a bug or a change?
We have not seen a Blizzard statement describing the behaviour as intended or as a known issue, and it is not among the fixes listed in the 22 September client build. Until Blizzard comments, treat it as current beta behaviour and check your bars after every trainer visit.
A quick check after every trainer visit
Two minutes at the trainer saves a long stretch of under-powered casting.
- Open the spellbook and expand any ability with a down arrow.
- Compare the rank on your bar with the highest rank you know.
- Keep a deliberate low rank on a separate button if you use it to save mana.
- Repeat after each level that offers new ranks.
