WoW Forever gear changes: hit, crit, healing power and dungeon loot

Understand unified hit and crit, healing-to-damage scaling, weapon skill and revised loot, with a practical way to compare WoW Forever gear.

Which gear stats are changing?

Forever combines spell, melee and ranged hit into one hit stat, and does the same for critical chance. Healing gear also contributes damage, while weapon-skill bonuses on individual items are being reduced.

Announced changeQuestion to ask when comparing items
Unified hit and critWhich attacks and spells do you use during this activity?
Bonus healing also contributes bonus damageWill you be healing a party, questing alone or alternating between them?
Less weapon skill per itemWhat does the current tooltip offer compared with your other options?
Caster weapons carry spell damage and healingDoes the whole weapon improve your relevant spells?
Situational effects on itemsHow often will the required enemy or environment occur?

Healing power and damage: a worked example

Blizzard specifies bonus damage equal to one third of bonus healing. As a simple arithmetic example, 90 bonus healing contributes 30 bonus damage under that rule.

That example is not a promise of 30 additional damage from every cast. It describes a character bonus, while the spell’s own scaling determines the result. When comparing two items, keep the rest of their stats in view.

Imagine choosing between a healing-focused reward and an item with more general utility. Write down your next few sessions: two dungeon healing runs and an evening of solo quests, for example. That helps you decide which benefits you will actually use without turning one attractive number into an automatic answer.

What unified hit and crit mean for hybrid characters

Our interpretation is that you should assess the character’s complete activity rather than sort every reward immediately into a melee or caster pile. A hybrid character can have several reasons to inspect the same item.

A shared stat label does not establish identical hit requirements for every ability, and it does not turn each point into the same amount of damage for every build. Use actual spell and attack results before setting a numerical target.

When testing a change, hold the target, level and main abilities steady. Swap the item you want to assess and repeat the same activity. If your playstyle changes halfway through, note that too; the result may reflect your decisions as much as the equipment.

Dungeon drops and quest rewards are being revised

Blizzard describes a review of dungeon drops, new rewards and improved sets. Named caster quest-reward examples include the Ladimore Heirloom Ring and Master Hunter’s Spellsword.

The practical implication for our guide work is to re-check rewards before sending someone through a long chain. An old item name or familiar boss is a useful lead, but the current reward and the cost of reaching it determine whether the trip fits your plan.

For a quest reward, compare what you give up as well as what you gain. If a choice is final, consider the role you expect to play next and save a note of the alternative you passed over. A new drop being available does not make it mandatory for every character.

How to evaluate situational trinkets

A conditional bonus needs context. Suppose one hypothetical trinket helps only against a creature type you rarely fight, while another gives a smaller benefit throughout your usual route. Compare the time each effect would actually help before judging their headline strength.

A useful inventory note has four fields: trigger, duration, cooldown and intended activity. Then ask whether the item deserves a regular slot, a specialist slot for a planned encounter or no bag space at all. This is a decision method, not a ranking of unreleased items.

Should you buy Classic best-in-slot items in advance?

Our recommendation is to wait for a verified item and a clear use before committing substantial gold. A best-in-slot list is only meaningful for a particular build, activity and set of available gear. Announcement coverage cannot supply all of those inputs.

Keep a shortlist of items to investigate, the maximum cost you would accept and the upgrade you expect. Revisit the shortlist when the actual tooltips and acquisition routes are known. For crafted gear, include the material cost and the value of keeping those materials for another use.
